The Tree of LIFE !!
This was our first day out in the city in a neighborhood (barrio) called Recoleta. Before the mass surge into BsAs by immigrants, la Boca (another barrio) was the home to the upper class elite. Yellow fever broke out there and all the people who could afford it moved to Recoleta. This left la Boca deserted with only the poor left. They turned mansions into tenement houses called conventillos. During the early immigration into Buenos Aires most poorer families moved into la Boca near the river. La Boca is where my project site is. And Recoleta is now very weathly with beautiful parks and Art markets and a very famous cemetary which is a city within a city.

As we walked from Recoleta to the main highway 9 de Julio we could see the different types of apartment buildings all over that area. Most of them are pretty modern, but some are from the 20's up till now. Finally we finished in the highway, where the entire street was closed off to listen to classical music. The concert was held in front of the famous obelisk and we saw a rare outdoor concert by a famous Argentinian conductor who normally is not available to everyone. I think his musicians were half Israeli and half Palestinian as an attempt to mend broken ties between the youth of the two countries. Ps ... this is a 14 lane highway that is closed for this event, so its important.

ReplyDeleteThe "Tree of Life" -- is that a banyan tree? Also I LOVE the fish! Uncle Larry and I went to Broadway on the Beach in Myrtle Beach and there was a bridge. we noticed people looking down. There was a school of catfish with a lone swan. On the bridge were containers of food and for 25 cents you could get a handful. When we threw the food at the fish they swarmed like the fish in your blog. Very funny! (ps: the swan didn't get much much).

ReplyDeleteI have completely blanked on the name of this species, but technically it is not a tree, but a plant! It does look very much like a Banyan Tree, but it isn´t.
